When the word “masterpiece” is used to describe something, there are a few assumptions made. Whether it be a painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, performance, opera, dance, literature, film, written word, a meal, or perhaps an event. In any medium, a masterpiece demonstrates exceptional skill by whomever made it, making it exceptional in some way.
What do we really mean when we call something a masterpiece and who gets to decide what becomes one?
Originally, a masterpiece was created by an artisan to demonstrate a mastery of their craft. It was the act of creation which could not be achieved by a novice and required ample focus, skill, and dedication.
A masterpiece needs to show not just quality, but extraordinary quality.
“To distinguish the better from the good and the best from the better.” -Giorgio Vasari, 1550 A.D.
